Mikias Sissay

Communication Specialist

Born in Addis Ababa in 1976, Mr. Mikias SISSAY is an Ethiopian Communication Specialist with 17+ years of experience. He has worked as a Lead Communication, Advocacy, Media, Spokesperson, and External Relation personnel under the United Nations (DPKO, FAO, WHO, UN Women), the African Union, the African Capacity Building Foundation, the World Bank, and the European Commission Development Policy Management among others. 

With M.A in Journalism and Communication, Mikias has spearheaded the development and implementation of Africa wide communication strategies, such as the AU African Shared Values Campaign, the UN Women Ending Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa, the AU Democracy and Election Assistance Unit, the AU Department of Political Affairs, and the 16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa. 

Mikias made a name for himself in the field of Communication and Media in the African region.  On top of his progressive experience over the years, he has written articles and academic papers on communication, developed many communication and media materials, not to mention the book he published: “Effectiveness of a Communication Strategy: The Case of African Shared Values”. Furthermore, he has planed and lead the implementation of a number of regional communication activates such as African Shared Values, Africa UNiTE to End Violence Against Women And Girls, and International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa, the AU summit, and global/regional conferences. Recently, he was recognized as the top regional communication specialists at the African Communication Week this year on the occasion of Africa Day 2017. Mikias is further known for his voluntary services in many human rights campaigns – the Right to Education - and services such as mentoring young adults in their academic and professional paths.  

Currently, he works as an independent communication consultant for EU Delegation to AU and World Bank; Election observer for the African Union, and is engaged in researching the role of communication in post-conflict peacebuilding in Africa.
